If you’re considering a switch to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), you probably already know how doing so can save you money. What you may not know is that making the switch isn’t something you should do lightly, as there are multiple things you should consider first. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure you get the most out of VoIP implementation.
Consider Installing a Second Internet Connection
Have you considered how your business would operate should your primary Internet service go down? Having a secondary Internet connection is much like having a generator in that your backup system kicks in when and if your primary service becomes inoperable. For best results, these services should be provided by different companies and use different connection mediums (copper, fiber optic or cable).
Implement Quality of Service
Quality of Service (QoS) prioritizes data traffic, allowing high priority sets to reach their destination sooner. VoIP calls are essentially data packets, which means QoS is important when it comes to eliminating static, echo or background noise, and reducing dropped calls.
Be Aware of Least-Cost Routing (LCR)
Many providers utilize what is known as Least-Cost Routing (LCR) when connecting phone calls. What this amounts to is the provider routing your calls in the cheapest way possible. While this can save you money, it doesn’t necessarily provide you with the best sound quality. What’s more, calls can sometimes be dropped because they are bought and sold four or five times before actually being connected. Always ask whether your provider uses LCR, and what the possible impact could be for your business.
Secure your System
Failing to secure your system can result in hackers gaining access to your network. Consider using a proxy service that routes requests to the user’s location and then authorizes them. Setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt messages is also recommended.
